Shtandart [clicky] |
At a recent visit to the Southampton Boat Show I was much taken with this beauty..
The frigate ‘Shtandart’ is a full-size replica of the flagship of the first Russian Baltic fleet built in 1999. There were no plans so they used naval historian, Victor Krainyukov, who had been commissioned in 1987 by the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg to find out everything possible about the ship.
After extensive research in the archives and records for multiple nations, and with the discovery of an 18th Century which showed the Shtandart in action, they had enough to go on to rebuild the ship. She's made in larch and is stunning.. the web site [clicky] has some shots of her under full sail that are superb..
Stunning..
She looks a beauty....and inspiration for Warlord Games Black Seas! Why did I hear Sean Connery speaking when I read the name of the ship?

DC - re. "Black seas" - you read my mind...

Iain, agreed..
DeleteBeautiful mate. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks JBM... I'm watching Black Sea's with more than a little interest as you can tell.. :o)
DeleteFine looking ship there!
ReplyDeleteDavid - she is for sure..
DeleteI saw her years ago when she was docked in Aarhus. Its funny to consider that she was a seriously powerful ship in her day, but when you see her, she seems so small and fragile. When she was in Aarhus, the replica of Endeavour was moored along side her too. Both ships were fantastic (and I was still on my Patrick O'Brian high in those days) and it was great to get a better understanding of what those old vessels were like.
ReplyDeleteMoif.. I stand amazed when I see the size of the ships Columbus sailed in when he discovered the new world..
DeleteIf you ever come to Denmark, then the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde is another fantastic experience. They have a replica of the second biggest Viking war ship ever found. A true 'serpent', and although its twice as big as a regular long ship, it's still tiny by comparison to what we today think of as 'big'.
DeleteFine looking ship Steve and the Black Sea models are very tempting too.
ReplyDeleteLee - can't wait to see what you make of them when they come out!
