French Army review...

As requested by Bluebear Jeff and because I'd reached a natural break following the completion of the Lee's Regiment, I decided to hold a review of the French army to see how my recruits were holding up, and whether there was any gaps that needed plugging..

I'm pleased to say that as you can see above, they are looking pretty good... as a reminder, these guys (and their Allied opponents who will be subject to a separate review) have all been painted since July '06...

...they currently stand at nine battalions of infantry, five squadrons of cavalry, 2 pieces of artillery, and various battalion guns, officers, and transport per side..

...from left - Navarre, Toulouse, and Lee (with battalion gun deployed), Bavarian Cuirassiers at bottom of picture... various command figures, and ammunition wagon also feature...

...closer view of HQ surrounded by his staunchest regiments.. units as before with the addition of Bearn (upper right)

...so, last of all, and pursuant to the topic of conversation on Franks blog recently, about camera manuals, settings, and the need to peruse said volumes - I happened to notice this funny button on my camera and started playing....

Finally, word reaches me that DG is on the road, and we have a game lined up for Sunday - more news on this as the day approaches...

  1. Morning Steve,

You've amassed a lovely army there. The various standards and guidons are an especially nice touch. My favorites are your new battalion of Wild Geese and that Bavarian battalion at the back. Beautiful! Anyway, great work all around, and I'm eager to watch your collection grow.

    Best Regards,

    Stokes

  2. Steve,

They look great! I must say that I'm particularly intrigued by those battalion guns . . . all of the artillery I have are really too big for such . . . and I really like the look of those.

Who made the figures? And what is the size of those bases? Also what is the base size of your field artillery?

Finally, that panorama movie of your troops was fantastic. I can really see that being great with a battle too.

What is your camera (mine is very old and . . . ) what is the make and model of yours?

  4. Good work there Steve. It's inspiration to do the same for mine (something that Jeff has also asked of me).

As I said very nice work indeed.

  5. ..thanks guys - much appreciated...

..just to address some of the questions...

    # the artillery I'm using as battalion guns was part of the initial bequeathment (is that a word??) from DG - in fact all the artillery is - and when I asked him he said he'd had them so long that he couldn't remember where he'd got them from - I reckon they are Minifigs though (1LP - Regimental Gun, and 2LP - Field Gun) from the 15mm Malburian & Great Northern Wars series..

    # Who made the figures? Many and varied - if you check my WSS Project page I have the regiments listed now....

    # what is the size of those bases? Also what is the base size of your field artillery? All bases are 30mm square, infantry/cavalry and artillery - makes life easier... :o))

    # Finally, that panorama movie of your troops was fantastic. I can really see that being great with a battle too. ** Agreed - I am at heart a bit of a geek and I quite liked the effect! To answer Fire at Will's other comment - the 30 second movie segment took 10Mb of disk on my camera which is a fairly standard 8 megapixel Olympus small camera (ie. not a pukka SLR/video camera....) I'm thinking I may try it more often in future...

Last of all - Giles/Grimsby line your guys up and lets have a look...! :o)

  6. Steve,
Very impressive army you have there. The movie clip is great (reminded me of that panorama shot in the film Waterloo!). Perhaps some sound effects or directors commentary next time?
